Sources

We base facts on primary sources: federal agencies (SSA, U.S. Treasury Bureau of the Fiscal Service, CFPB, NCUA), state regulators, and the published terms of card issuers and lenders. Every article lists its sources at the bottom.

Accuracy and updates

• Each article shows the date it was last reviewed.
• Figures that change often, such as payment dates, fees and limits, are checked at each review.
• When we cannot confirm a figure from an official source, we say so and tell you how to check it yourself.

Independence

We earn money from loan referrals (see how we make money). Commercial relationships do not affect what our guides say or which options they recommend first.
