How we verify our guides
Every figure comes from a page we opened and read.
Our process
- We pick one question and find the agency that sets the rule: for example the CFPB, FTC, IRS, FDIC or a state regulator.
- We open the agency page and read it. Search summaries are not used as a source for a published figure.
- We write the answer in plain words and keep the numbers exactly as the agency states them.
- Where we add our own arithmetic, such as a worked example, we say so in the text and show the inputs.
- We list every source at the bottom of the page and state the date we read it.
- If an official page does not support a claim, we leave the claim out.
AI-assisted drafting
Our guides are drafted with AI writing tools. AI can make mistakes, which is why every figure is checked against the page it comes from and every source is linked, so you can check it yourself.
When rules change
Fees, limits and dates change. Each guide shows its last updated date. We re-check time-sensitive figures on a regular schedule and update the date when we do. If you see something out of date, tell us at our contact page.
