ATMs and the free withdrawal
- Each federal deposit earns one free U.S. ATM withdrawal, good until the end of the following month.
- The Direct Express surcharge-free network has about 75,000 ATMs, including MoneyPass, Mastercard ATM Alliance, PNC and Fifth Third. Use the app or website to find one.
- Direct Express sets no daily ATM limit, but ATM owners usually allow $200 to $1,000 per day.
Ask for cash back when you pay with your PIN at a grocery store, or walk into any bank or credit union with the Mastercard sign and ask a teller. Both are free every time.
Moving money off the card
- To your own bank account: $1.50 per transfer through the app, website or phone. Transfers take about 3 business days.
- To Cash App, Venmo or PayPal: Direct Express only lists transfers to a personal U.S. bank account. Some people add the card as a debit card in other apps; those apps’ own rules and fees apply.
- Outside the U.S.: transfers to foreign bank accounts are not available.
What the card can’t do
- No loans or cash advances. The official FAQ says funds are not available until your federal benefit is deposited. See Direct Express cash advance: what is actually possible.
- No overdrafts. You can only spend what is on the card.
- No personal deposits. Only the government can add money, so a lender cannot deposit a loan to it.
- No pay-at-the-pump gas. You have to pay the cashier inside.
Garnishment and protection
The official FAQ notes that Social Security benefits are generally protected from garnishment by creditors (with exceptions such as child support and alimony), and SSI benefits cannot be garnished at all. Report a lost card within 2 business days to limit your liability to $50.
