Same Day Loans: How to Get Money Today and What It Costs

Lots of lenders advertise "same day loans", but whether money reaches you today depends less on the lender’s ad and more on the loan type, the time you apply and how the money is sent. Here is how same-day funding really works.

Key takeaways
  • Cash in hand today is most reliable from a storefront lender, a pawnshop or a credit card cash advance.
  • Online loans are sent by bank transfer. Applying early on a weekday gives you the best chance of same-day money; otherwise expect the next business day.
  • Same day loans are usually payday or installment loans. At $15 per $100, a two-week loan costs about 391% APR.

What counts as a same day loan?

"Same day loan" is a promise about speed, not a separate kind of loan. In practice it is usually one of these:

  • A payday loan: a small loan, often $500 or less, due in one payment on your next payday.
  • A short-term installment loan: a larger amount repaid in several payments over months.
  • A cash advance: from an app, from your bank, or from your credit card at an ATM.
  • A pawn loan: cash against an item you leave with the pawnshop.

"Same day lenders" are simply lenders that can approve and pay out within hours. No legitimate lender can promise approval before it reviews your application, and none should charge you a fee before you get the money.

Why online "same day" loans often arrive tomorrow

Most online lenders send money by ACH, the network banks use for direct deposits. Same Day ACH exists, but it runs in fixed processing windows on business days only, and the last window closes in the afternoon Eastern time. Your own bank then has until the end of its processing day to make the money available. If you are approved after the cutoff, or on a Friday evening, weekend or federal holiday, the money usually lands on the next business day.

Some lenders can also pay through instant payment networks such as the Federal Reserve’s FedNow Service, which settles payments within seconds, 24 hours a day, every day of the year. That only works if both the lender’s bank and your bank take part, so ask the lender how it sends funds before you count on same-day money.

Weekends and holidays

If you need money on a Saturday or Sunday, an open storefront lender, a pawnshop or a credit card cash advance is the realistic option. See weekend payday loans.

How to give yourself the best chance of same-day money

  1. Apply in the morning on a weekday. The earlier you are approved, the more transfer windows are left that day.
  2. Have documents ready: government photo ID, Social Security number, recent pay stub or benefit letter, and your bank’s routing and account numbers.
  3. Use the account your pay goes into. Lenders check your income from your deposits; a different account slows verification.
  4. Watch your phone and email. Many approvals wait on an e-signature or a quick verification call.
  5. Ask about debit card or instant funding, and whether it costs extra.

What same day loans cost

Speed is expensive. The CFPB says a typical two-week payday loan with a fee of $15 per $100 borrowed works out to an APR of almost 400%. That is $45 on a $300 loan for two weeks. Installment loans spread payments out but can cost more in total over a long term.

Example: borrowing $300 for two weeks
OptionApproximate cost
Payday loan at $15 per $100$45 (about 391% APR)
Same payday loan renewed twice$135 in fees, and you still owe the $300
Credit union PAL at 28% APRAbout $3 interest plus an application fee of up to $20
Cash advance app, free standard transferOften $0 (optional tip), but it may not arrive today

The CFPB found that four out of five payday loans are rolled over or renewed within 14 days. Before you borrow, check that you can repay in full on your next payday and still cover rent and food. Use our payday loan cost calculator to see the dollar cost.

How to check a same day lender

  • Licensed in your state. Confirm the license with your state’s financial regulator or NMLS Consumer Access.
  • APR and finance charge shown before you sign. Federal law requires these disclosures.
  • No upfront fees, gift cards or requests for your online banking password. Those are signs of a scam.
Military borrowers

If you are on active duty or a covered dependent, the Military Lending Act caps most consumer loans at 36% Military APR. Talk to your base financial counselor or relief society first.

Amounts, fees and terms depend on your state. Some states ban payday loans or cap rates at 36%, so lenders do not offer them there. See payday loan laws by state.

Frequently asked questions

Can I really get a loan the same day?

Often, yes. Storefront lenders, pawnshops and credit card cash advances can give you cash the same day. Online lenders can sometimes fund the same day if you are approved early on a business day, but many deposits arrive the next business day.

Which lenders give same day loans?

Storefront payday and installment lenders, pawnshops and some online lenders that use same-day ACH, debit card or instant payment funding. Check that any lender is licensed in your state. This site is not a lender; our form passes your request to lenders in a network.

Can I get a same day loan with bad credit?

Many short-term lenders look mainly at your income and bank activity, so bad credit does not automatically rule you out. Approval is never guaranteed, and costs are higher for riskier borrowers.

Why did my same day loan not arrive today?

Usually because you were approved after the bank transfer cutoff, or on a weekend or holiday when ACH does not run. Your bank may also take until the end of its processing day to post the deposit.

What is the cheapest way to get money today?

An employer paycheck advance, a credit union payday alternative loan if you are already a member, or a credit card cash advance repaid quickly usually cost far less than a payday loan.
