Same Day Cash Advance: Apps, Payday Loans and Card Advances Compared

A same day cash advance can come from an app, a payday lender or your credit card. Each can put money in your hands today, but the price of speed varies a lot. Here is what each one really costs and how to get it today.

Key takeaways
  • Apps can send money in minutes, but usually charge for instant delivery; the free transfer takes 1–3 business days.
  • Same day payday loans are fastest in a store. Online, approval early on a weekday gives the best chance of a same-day deposit.
  • A credit card cash advance is instant at an ATM, but interest starts immediately with no grace period.

Same day payday loans

A payday loan is usually $500 or less and due in one payment on your next payday. At a store, you can leave with cash once approved. Online lenders mostly pay by ACH, which runs on business days only; if you are approved after the afternoon cutoff or on a weekend, expect the next business day. The CFPB says a typical two-week payday loan with a fee of $15 per $100 borrowed works out to an APR of almost 400%.

Renewals add up

The CFPB found four out of five payday loans are rolled over or renewed within 14 days. Each renewal costs another fee and the amount you owe stays the same. Only borrow what you can repay in full on payday.

Credit card cash advance

If your credit card has a cash advance limit, you can withdraw cash at an ATM with your card PIN. According to the CFPB, the card company may charge a flat fee or a percentage of the advance, you will commonly pay a higher interest rate than for purchases, and interest starts as soon as you withdraw the money. Many cards set a cash advance limit lower than the overall credit limit. Repaid within a few weeks, a card advance is often cheaper than a payday loan.

Which same day cash advance to choose

  1. Under $150 and you have direct deposit? An app advance with an instant fee is usually cheapest for money today.
  2. Have a credit card? Compare its cash advance fee and APR with a payday loan’s dollar cost.
  3. Need more, or apps say no? A licensed payday or installment lender, in a store for cash today or online if you apply early on a weekday. See same day loans.
  4. Can wait a day or two? A credit union payday alternative loan (max 28% APR) or a free standard app transfer saves money.
On benefits?

If your SSI payment is late or missing, ask Social Security about an immediate payment, and call 211 for local help, before borrowing. See loans for SSI recipients.

Amounts, fees and terms depend on your state. Some states ban payday loans or cap rates at 36%, so lenders do not offer them there. See payday loan laws by state.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a cash advance the same day?

Yes. A cash advance app can send money in minutes if you pay for instant transfer, a storefront payday lender can give you cash, and a credit card cash advance is instant at an ATM. Online payday loans are same day only if approved early on a business day.

What is the cheapest same day cash advance?

For small amounts, an app advance is usually cheapest, even with an instant fee of a few dollars. A credit card cash advance repaid quickly is often cheaper than a payday loan.

Do same day cash advance apps check credit?

Most do not run a hard credit check. They base your limit on your direct deposits and account history.

Are same day payday loans the same as cash advances?

Lenders often use the terms interchangeably. A payday cash advance is a short-term loan due on your next payday, which is different from an app advance or a credit card cash advance.
